In 2013, my son Ricky and I embarked on a new adventure by founding GWO Trucking. Coming from a background in the school bus industry, I thought the transition to trucking would be a breeze. How different could two diesel fleets be, right? As it turned out, they were worlds apart.
The early years were a harsh reality check. We faced mounting debts, had our trucks repossessed, and fell into contracts that preyed on our inexperience. The dream that was GWO Trucking teetered on the brink of collapse. But we didn’t give up. From 2015 to 2016, we immersed ourselves in learning, cleared our debts, and seized every opportunity that came our way. Ricky even earned his CDL, and we bought a new truck. Our persistence paid off when we landed our first contract, hauling for a small church project. That modest success led to a public works project that felt like a major victory for us. It was a small step, but it felt monumental.
Each breakthrough fueled our determination. Discovering construction opportunities that aligned with my family’s background was another turning point. My father and brothers had run a small construction company, so it felt like destiny calling us back to our roots. We embraced the challenge with the Chicago Housing Authority and never looked back.
Since then, we’ve been on a relentless quest to refine our services and expand our reach. We’ve doubled our revenue almost every two years, a testament to our unwavering commitment and the lessons learned from each triumph. Through it all, we’ve fostered a culture of teamwork and respect, recognizing that our success is not just our own, but also that of our dedicated employees and subcontractors. Their hard work and loyalty have been the backbone of our achievements.
Today, Ricky and I are filled with gratitude for every opportunity, every employee who has been part of our journey, and every subcontractor who has joined us in our mission. We are thankful for every customer who has trusted us with their projects. Our story is one of resilience, learning, and multiple breakthroughs—a story that continues to unfold with each new chapter.
